One of the things I love the most about California is its diversity.
Where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can hear a variety of languages, taste the flavors of countless cuisines, share the sidewalk, or sit next to people from all corners of the globe. The rich mix of cultures here in the state is a beautiful thing, and it makes California a unique and vibrant place to call home.
But diversity in California isn’t just about culture.
When we talk about DEI – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – we’re also talking about opportunities. California strives to give its diverse population – which includes not just a wide range of cultures but also women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, veterans, immigrants, and people with disabilities – the opportunities they deserve. Whether in jobs, housing, or education, DEI is about ensuring everyone has a fair shot at success.
Too often, people don’t fully understand what DEI stands for or who it stands for. It’s crucial that we call DEI by the words it represents: Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. These are the values that should guide our work in creating a more just and equal California, and it’s up to all of us to champion them.
