California has an incredible opportunity to level up its education system and become a leader in national reform.

As the federal Department of Education moves out of the picture in 2025, California must step up and take a stronger role in shaping the future of our students. With nearly 40 million residents, our state’s education system is as diverse as it is vast, and it’s crucial we evolve to meet the needs of all learners.

California’s education system faces a number of challenges, but every challenge brings an opportunity for growth. These include addressing academic performance gaps, understanding why our financial investments haven’t always translated into better outcomes, tackling teacher shortages and large class sizes, combating chronic absenteeism, and improving the quality of our curriculum.

This is our moment to reimagine what education can be.

The California Department of Education needs a fresh approach, one that sets an expectation of excellence, not only from our teachers but from our students as well. We need to ensure that every child – regardless of background – has access to a quality education that prepares them for a successful future.

Let’s work together to create an education system that inspires both teachers and students to reach their full potential, and that serves as a model for other states.
